What to Expect at the ER (Emergency Room)
The emergency room at BluePearl (and others) prioritizes patients based upon need. This is called triage. It is a system that allows treatment of the most severe patients to be treated first.
Examples of the most serious patients/critical patients who need life-saving care and will have first priority:
- Difficulty breathing
- Bloat (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus)
- Excessive Bleeding
- Poisoning
- Patients who are unresponsive
- Major trauma (hit by a car, etc.)
- Open Bone Fractures
- Actively seizing
- Not able to urinate
Examples of patients who need urgent care:
- Vomiting
- Anorexia
- Sneezing
- Diarrhea
- Wounds
- Broken bone with skin intact
- Difficulty walking
- Coughing
- Many types of Eye Problems
Stable patients who will likely have an extended wait to be seen at the ER:
- Various skin problems
- Various ear problems
- Irritated Eyes
- Visible lumps/masses
- Limping
- Abscess
- Broken nail
- Ticks/Fleas
Hospitals and emergency rooms can be scary places for everyone. Try to stay as calm as possible. ERs are seeing a rise in the number of emergency cases and are trying to treat more pets than ever before. As a result, wait times may be long.
